In 1879, the Ryukyu Kingdom was annexed by Japan, and the islands became part of Okinawa Prefecture. During World War II, the islands were a major battleground, and many civilians and soldiers lost their lives. After the war, the United States occupied the islands, and they were returned to Japan in 1972.
