The system is not without criticism. Rural schools in Sabah and Sarawak still lack basic infrastructure like clean water and reliable internet (a problem highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic). By 2027, a new curriculum will be rolled out focusing on eliminating formal exams for younger students (abolishing the UPSR and PT3 permanently) and focusing on literacy, numeracy, and character building (the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 goal).
