Aesthetically, the 2004 context is vital. Released during a time when reality television was booming and the boundaries of privacy were eroding, Les Textiles questions the gaze. Unlike many films of the genre, the camera in Les Textiles does not voyeuristically fetishize the body. Instead, it normalizes it, forcing the audience to confront their own conditioning. We, the viewers, are the "textiles." We enter the film looking for the absurd or the erotic, and we leave realizing that our preoccupation with clothing is a symptom of a deeper societal neurosis.
