Disney took a massive risk. Previous Renaissance films had succeeded by turning European castles into Broadway stages. Translating a Chinese folk legend for a Western audience without erasing its cultural core was a tightrope walk.

Disney villains are usually charismatic (Scar), campy (Ursula), or tragic (Gaston). Shan Yu is none of these. He is a force of nature. With his hawk-like eyes, massive frame, and chillingly quiet voice, Shan Yu represents pure, uncaring destruction. mulan 1998
